How to decorate walls and turn a good profit? Methods for B2B service providers

Choosing the right wall decoration technique is no longer just a matter of aesthetics. It dictates your margin, lead times, and whether you’ll be able to scale your business. Discover the opportunities and main risks associated with six popular interior finishing methods offered by B2B companies.

A guide to wall decoration methods that will define your business

Everyone in the decoration and interior finishing industry wants to: create projects that impress premium clients while simultaneously building an increasingly powerful company.

The walls themselves are just the beginning, but they represent the largest surface area influencing the perception of the entire room.

The sheer number of available techniques can be overwhelming. How should you decorate walls for clients to offer the best possible solutions? Use a mural, wallpaper, or perhaps UV printing? Each technique has its own specifics, strengths, and natural limitations.

We analyzed them based on what is crucial for your company’s stable growth: from durability and resistance to wear, through real material costs, to the implementation difficulty threshold and available investment financing models.

At the very beginning, we also want to highlight one very important fact. According to 2025 data, the construction industry is one of the most indebted sectors of the UK economy.

And this is precisely the key context for every business decision you will make in the near future. The choice of wall decoration technology becomes a matter of stability and survival in conditions where you have much less room for error.

The industry is in crisis, so propose solutions that save money in the long term and build relationships based on trust.

At the end of this article, you will also find a summary to help you make a decision.

Classic Mural

A mural is pure art transferred onto a wall. The pros? It is absolutely inimitable. Even if the same artist tries to recreate the same work, the brushstrokes and texture will be different. You are therefore selling the client the feeling of owning the only copy in the world, which justifies a higher price for the entire service.

It’s a good solution for brands seeking individualization and the “human touch” – which scores points in certain industries. For example, places where live painting can attract the attention of passers-by even before the venue opens come to mind.

Looking at the subject from this side, human participation is a benefit – in others, it might be slightly different.

Let’s move on to a deeper analysis.

Business implementation

This is where the uphill climb begins. You need an artist in your team (and a great one, with an inimitable style, like XENZ). A major barrier is finding and retaining a person with unique skills and integrating them into construction rigor.

Imagine the clash: one minute an artist calls you talking about the need for more time and too much pressure, and the next, a site manager notes that 13 people from the crew are waiting for that one wall. How do you combine such extreme expectations?

An additional person in the team also means setting up contracts, copyright issues, as well as Health and Safety (BHP) training or working-at-height medical exams. In short: a lot of paperwork.

In addition, scalability is practically zero. One artist can only be in one place at a time, and if they are 3 days late because the creative process sometimes requires more time, the entry of the flooring or furniture assembly crew falls apart.

Main business risk? Dependency of the entire venture on one person (so-called „key-person risk”). Illness, burnout, or resignation of the artist during the project can paralyze operations and expose you to contractual penalties for delays.

Durability and application of the mural

The durability of a mural depends mainly on the quality of the paints used and the preparation of the surface. Well-executed and protected with varnish, it can survive for years in pristine condition.

However, its resistance to mechanical damage or moisture is limited. Outdoor painting requires specialized paints and is more exposed to atmospheric factors.

You should also update your knowledge on requirements (e.g., regarding volatile organic compounds – VOCs) in certified buildings like LEED or BREEAM. This is another issue you must watch during implementation.

Remember that as the general contractor, it is you who provides the warranty for the entirety of the work, which in this case is not fully dependent on you.

Where will this method work?

This is a solution for brands looking for individualization and artistry. Target the HoReCa industry (restaurants, hotels, cafes), boutique offices, concept stores, and individual clients with high budgets for whom history and uniqueness are more important than lead time.

Execution difficulty

Every mural means weeks, and sometimes even months of work. The process is long, requires precision, and the end result is always a bit of an unknown. Possible corrections are difficult, expensive, and sometimes impossible.

To avoid errors, you must oversee two aspects: the artist providing a sample of the work for the client’s approval and establishing a strict technical brief (at what hours work can take place, where to store tools and paints, how to protect the surroundings).

Financing

Entering this business does not require equipment investment. All the capital lies in the person, and financing is based mainly on advances from clients for the purchase of materials.

This makes the company’s growth organic (largely dependent on the talent and style of the person you collaborate with).

Large-format wallpapers

A large-format wallpaper is a quick path to a space metamorphosis. In the premium segment, it is valued primarily for repeatability and choice: from photorealistic landscapes to complex geometric patterns with metallic accents.

Want to see some really great examples? Take a look at the Internity Home report (link at the end of the article). You will find models with structural motifs that look like works of art – we’re not exaggerating.

Business implementation

Implementing large-format wallpapers is one of the simplest ways to scale an offer with minimal operational risk. Thanks to the production outsourcing model, you avoid investing in an expensive machine park, relying instead on proven partners and the current skills of your crew.

It is a predictable solution: it allows for instant pricing, guarantees a constant margin, and eliminates aesthetic surprises, giving the client exactly what they approved in the project.

In this case, the main risk is the low entry barrier, which means huge competition. Without a unique specialization (e.g., in installation on difficult surfaces), it’s easy to become just another contractor competing mainly on price.

Remember that in public utility buildings (offices, hotels, malls), every material must have a fire safety certificate. If you install wallpaper without a certificate, the Fire Department may order its removal during building handover. As a B2B contractor, you bear the responsibility for this before the investor.

Durability and application

Vinyl and non-woven bases, which modern wallpapers are made of, do not fade, do not scratch, and are washable. They can be durable even in high-traffic spaces.

However, it must be remembered that wallpaper will reveal every wall irregularity, which forces a Q4 finish standard and absolute precision from the assembly crew.

The weak links remain: the joining of strips, which under the natural movement of the building may become visible over time (we advise looking for widths like 130 cm instead of 50 cm to minimize the number of joints; also pay attention to the lighting above the wall – if you install strong LED panels, every tiny overlap at the joint will stand out) and limited tolerance to constant moisture, which without specialized lamination excludes this technique from certain spaces.

In new office buildings, walls often “release” moisture. If you seal it with airtight vinyl wallpaper too early, mold may develop underneath.

Where will this method work?

Everywhere where speed, repeatability, and high volume matter. Retail chains, corporate offices, developers (finishing show apartments), trade fairs, and events.

Execution difficulty

Installing large-format wallpaper is a job for at least two people, requiring the highest precision.

The lead time is shorter than for a mural, but we are still talking about hours of work. Logistics related to transporting long rolls and preparing adhesives can also be troublesome.

You must also ensure that the license for the graphics used in creating personalized wallpaper allows for use in commercial spaces.

Financing

Even though the costs of implementing the service in your business are low (covering the purchase of materials and tools), as we already mentioned, margins on installation services can be unsatisfying due to high competition.

Wall UV Printing

Wall UV printing involves directly applying graphics to almost any vertical surface (including glass, brick, or surfaces with visible irregularities) using a specialized printer. The head, moving along the wall, sprays ink which is immediately cured with UV light.

The effect? Photographic quality, bulletproof durability, and a process that eliminates most logistical problems known from other techniques. It combines the best of a mural and wallpaper: the uniqueness and personalization of art with digital precision and repeatability.

Business implementation

You can test the market in an outsourcing model, commissioning prints from a partner company, or think about investing in a machine.

A business model based on your own equipment is simple: high margin on the service, low operating costs (ink and service), and full control over the process. Investing in equipment gives you a tool to scale the business.

The main obstacle at the very beginning? The entry barrier. The initial investment in equipment may be perceived as a risk, but it is simultaneously the greatest advantage because it filters out the competition and allows you to operate in a high-margin niche.

Durability and application

Thanks to UV curing, the ink forms a thin, polymer layer on the wall that is resistant to abrasion and washing. Pigments are protected against fading, which guarantees multi-year color longevity, even on outdoor walls or sunny storefronts.

The printer can handle almost any surface: from smooth drywall to raw concrete, brick, wood, and even glass or metal. This opens the door to projects in demanding commercial spaces, offices, hospitals, or even on facades where wallpaper or foil wouldn’t stand a chance.

Where will this method work?

Target the premium segment: Class A offices, medical clinics, hotels, developers, and public utility buildings (schools, hospitals).

Execution difficulty

This is one of the easiest processes to execute. Most of the work takes place at the stage of preparing the graphic file and calibrating the machine. The printing itself is automated and fast – covering a wall with a complex pattern can take a few hours. You can even print on a dark wall (thanks to white underprinting).

Check the details: How does a wall printer work?

The process is clean, quiet, and requires minimal protection of the space. UV printing is almost odorless and does not emit harmful substances after installation. You can print the wall in the evening, and in the morning employees will enter the office without complaints about an intense paint smell.

In the interest of cost, clients are increasingly preferring non-intrusive options. How do we know? For instance, from a recent job posting found on an industry Facebook group:

“Work is carried out in a functioning dental clinic, temporary closure of the clinic is a last resort. We require (…) protection and minimization of the work area and an efficient pace so as not to block the facility’s operation.”

The challenges can be the logistics of the machine itself (transport and bringing it into the building) and perfect preparation of the file for printing.

Financing

The cost of a professional wall printer, thanks to which you can provide a high-quality service, is an expense of around ~£12,750 , which makes leasing a popular form of financing. In practice, with a typical 60-month contract and 10% down payment, the monthly operating cost is around 1,080 PLN net.

Plotter foil graphics

Decorating walls with plotter foil graphics starts with mechanically cutting patterns from self-adhesive vinyl foil using a cutting plotter. After cutting, unnecessary foil fragments are removed, and the actual motif is transferred to the wall using transfer foil.

The technique is mainly used for logos, precise typography, and geometric decorations.

Business implementation

Implementing plotter foil into the offer is based on one of two operational models: outsourcing or investing in your own machine park.

The first path involves ordering cut patterns from external suppliers, which eliminates the cost of purchasing equipment and allows you to focus exclusively on installation at the client’s site.

The second model involves purchasing your own plotter, which gives full production independence, lowers material costs at a large scale of orders, and enables greater control directly during execution.

The main business risk in this case is reducing the company’s participation to the role of a cheap, simple service. If you focus only on logos, you will compete with hundreds of small agencies. The key is specializing in complex, multi-layered applications.

Durability and application

The durability of plotter foil indoors is usually several years. A smooth surface (Q4 standard) and appropriate wall paint are key (ceramic or latex coatings can weaken the adhesive’s grip). For more difficult surfaces, you must use special high-tack foil (with very strong rubber adhesive) or prime the wall with a special foil primer.

Properly applied foil is usually moisture-resistant but prone to peeling of thin elements. The minimum application temperature is usually +10°C. If the office building is not yet heated, the adhesive will not bond properly.

The technique works best, for example, in office signage, branding of service premises, and in some residential projects.

Watch out for one aspect! In B2B contracts, it’s worth noting that after removing the foil (e.g., after 3 years), a mark may remain on the wall (the place under the foil hasn’t faded from the sun like the rest of the wall).

Where will this method work?

Corporate offices (room signage, space branding), service and retail premises (storefronts, promotions), property managers (visual information systems).

Execution difficulty

The level of difficulty depends on the complexity of the project and the chosen surface. The application process itself requires precise positioning of the graphics using a laser level and squeegeeing technique to get rid of unsightly air bubbles.

Importantly, the most time-consuming stage is often “weeding” the foil, i.e., manually removing unnecessary fragments from the cut sheet. With detailed patterns, this requires extraordinary patience and time… and both are usually in short supply on a construction site.

In the case of large formats, working in pairs is necessary to avoid material deformation while transferring it to the wall.

Financing

The financing model for this technique depends on the scale of activity. With outsourcing, the cost is variable and covers the purchase of ready, cut graphics, which is usually financed from current client advances.

Investment in one’s own machines usually starts with the purchase of a desktop plotter (cost around £300 – £600 ), which is most often covered from the company’s own funds due to the relatively low entry threshold. For larger machines with a width over 120 cm, operational leasing is possible.

Fixed operating costs include the purchase of foil rolls and regular replacement of cutting blades.

3D Decors

3D decorations are a technique involving the assembly of physical forms – letters, logos, or shapes – made of materials of any thickness, which give projects a three-dimensional dimension. You can choose from: gypsum panels, moss panels or stabilized greenery, MDF and wood decors (including slats), and upholstered panels.

The physical structure of 3D letters and logos naturally interacts with lighting, creating dynamic shadows that add depth and an architectural touch to projects.

The downside of this solution? Marek Suchocki from the “Projektant Wnętrz” YouTube channel (240k subscribers) put it concisely (but accurately!):

“You have to clean it.”

It sounds funny, but for a business client, it’s a real operational cost.

Business implementation

Implementing 3D decorations usually relies on an outsourcing model. Your role then focuses on material consulting, design, and assembly.

However, if your goal is total control over time and costs, own production (using a CO2 laser, CNC milling machine, or thermal plotter) will give you what you expect.

You must remember operational challenges, such as: logistics of delicate components (e.g., acrylic or metal) and precise selection of assembly chemicals, which must permanently hold the weight of the decoration without damaging the substrate structure.

The main business risk is primarily logistics and assembly. Damaging an expensive, custom-made element made of plexiglass or metal during transport or assembly generates huge costs and delays. This requires excellent planning.

Durability and application

The durability of this wall decoration method depends on the chosen raw material, however, in indoor conditions, materials such as acrylic, metal, or hard PVC show multi-year resistance to aging and UV radiation.

Lightweight styrodur, although it allows for the creation of effective, large forms, is characterized by lower mechanical resistance, which is worth considering in high-traffic areas.

This is an ideal solution, for example, for hotel receptions, chillout zones in offices, but also for hotel rooms (e.g., in the form of headboards) or in private interiors (e.g., as a TV wall).

Where will this method work?

Premium and luxury segment: hotel receptions, law firms, showrooms, CEO zones in offices – everywhere where image and prestige (rather than functionality) come first.

Execution difficulty

The most difficult stage is the flawless transfer of the design to the wall, which requires the use of positioning templates and cross-line lasers to maintain perfect spacing and verticals.

You must also master the selection of appropriate assembly chemicals. Different polymer adhesives will hold lightweight styrodur, while others will be required for heavy plexiglass or metal, especially on demanding surfaces.

Remember that walls in new buildings are still “working.” 3D panels mounted rigidly (especially gypsum ones) can crack. You must include perimeter expansion joints (gaps at the floor and ceiling).

It is also your responsibility to ensure safety. Always require a Declaration of Performance (DoP) from the manufacturer, and when mounting large-format 3D elements over people’s heads (e.g., ceiling decorations), you must have a technical mounting design signed by a structural engineer.

Financing

In the outsourcing model, the entry threshold is zero, because you cover the cost of ready-made elements directly from client advances, earning on the assembly service.

If you decide on your own machine park and are looking for the lowest entry threshold, a thermal plotter (cost approx. £980) is a sufficient option, allowing you to create projects from styrodur.

Printed acoustic panels

Printed acoustic panels are a functional solution combining sound absorption technology with personalized graphics.

Made of sound-absorbing materials, such as specialized foams, they effectively reduce reverberation while serving as an aesthetic decorative element or a branding carrier.

A downside worth warning the client about? Panels made of soft acoustic foams are very delicate. If you install them in a traffic corridor (e.g., in a narrow hallway), they will quickly get dented or scratched.

Look at this solution from an additional perspective. Acoustic panels can be a solution to a client’s business problem. This changes the entire math.

And you can sell this solution:

  • very poorly: “We have nice printed panels. They cost £30 – £50/m² . Do you want them?”
  • or very well: “I know your open spaces have a problem with reverb. This reduces team productivity by 20-30%, increases errors and employee fatigue. We have a solution: Class A acoustic panels that eliminate this problem and simultaneously strengthen your company’s branding. It’s an investment that pays off in team health and efficiency. Do you want it?”

Business implementation

Implementing acoustic panels into the business offer is most often based on a cooperation model with manufacturers, which allows for the realization of orders without investing in your own production lines or large-format UV printers.

Your role focuses on consulting regarding the placement of elements and preparing graphics that fit the project.

However, if you opt for own production, an investment in a UV Flatbed printer or sublimation system and a precise cutting plotter will be necessary.

What is the main business risk in this case? Selling without understanding the product. It is a functional product that requires knowledge. You must familiarize yourself with sound absorption classes (from A – best and most expensive, to D).

Durability and application

Modern panels are resistant to deformation and fading. They maintain the saturated colors of UV printing for years. Their main goal is acoustics, and decoration is added value.

They work well in offices, restaurants, and homes, where they effectively eliminate reverb while fulfilling an aesthetic function.

Where will this method work?

Open-space offices, conference rooms, restaurants, call centers, private cinema rooms – everywhere where reverb and noise are a real, daily problem.

Execution difficulty

Execution requires strategic placement of panels at sound reflection points, which affects their effectiveness. In this case, the work schedule is important: you install the panels at the very end because they are prone to dirt and construction dust.

You must take into account the risk of error when matching patterns on edges and chamfers, where a millimeter shift on rigid material is immediately visible and impossible to correct as easily as in the case of flexible wallpaper.

Paying attention to the mentioned limitations, the installation itself will be quick and simple for you thanks to technical Velcro systems or contact adhesives that allow for easy correction of the position of elements.

Financing

The cost of entry depends on the chosen business model. In the outsourcing model, your startup cost is 0 PLN. You simply order the ready panel (average £30 – £50/m² ) only after receiving the advance, and you sell it with a margin of 100 – 200% as a specialized solution to the noise problem.

Transitioning to own production requires about £19,600 – £29,400 for a UV Flatbed printer and a cutting plotter.

Summary: how to decorate walls to earn (and not just execute)?

After a detailed analysis, the time has come to make a decision.

The classic mural remains a solution for the premium segment, where uniqueness justifies the price. However, its implementation is not only a personal risk (so-called “key-person risk”) but also a significant administrative overhead – from copyright agreements to compliance with VOC standards in certified buildings.

It is a high-margin model but burdened with the greatest operational risk and practically zero scalability.

Wallpaper, although seemingly simple and scalable, hides serious traps in the B2B environment. The problem goes beyond the requirement of an ideal substrate (Q4) and the risk of visible joints.

The contractor’s responsibility for fire safety certificates becomes key, as their absence can result in an order to strip the material during inspection by the Fire Department. This is a model where the low margin does not compensate for the growing legal and technical risk.

Wall UV printing can be the answer to many industry challenges. Its advantage is repeatable, digital quality, as well as the cleanliness and speed of a process that minimally disrupts work on the site.

Although the barrier is the initial investment (CAPEX), it is this very barrier that filters the competition, allowing operation in a niche with a high margin, high scalability, and, most importantly, predictability.

Plotter foil is a specialized tool whose profitability depends on the complexity of the project. Its greatest hidden cost is time-consuming manual work, and success is linked to application conditions (temperature, type of paint).

The contractor must also manage the client’s expectations regarding durability and possible marks after removal.

3D decors move the service from the plane of decoration into the area of structural responsibility. Risk is no longer limited to logistics and assembly. Safety issues become key – from the Declaration of Performance to the need for a mounting design from a structural engineer for ceiling elements.

It is a high-margin model which, however, requires engineering competence and legal foresight from the contractor.

Acoustic panels are an example of value-added sales, where a real functional problem is solved. Success here depends on product knowledge (sound absorption classes) and assembly precision, as rigid modules do not forgive errors in matching.

It is a model with a high margin and scalability, provided that the company can sell and implement solutions, not just products.

Wall decoration methods for B2B – a key conclusion to consider

The modern B2B market requires contractors to provide more than just aesthetic execution. It is necessary to manage the entire spectrum of risks: from staffing shortages through price instability to growing formal requirements.

Technologies that provide repeatability, durability, and compliance with standards cease to be a cost and become an investment in business stability.

Ultimately, the choice boils down to a decision whether the company wants to compete based on hard-to-scale human labor and its associated risks, or base its growth on predictable, automated processes that minimize the industry’s most common problems.

How will it be in your case?

Inspirations: this is how the best in the market do it

Looking for inspiration on using the described wall decoration methods? Look at how the current leaders do it. Top fit-out companies such as Tétris, Reesco, or the space-branding specialist studio BIT CREATIVE (links at the end of the article), do not limit themselves to one solution.

Their advantage lies in combining many techniques into a coherent, strategic whole. An artistic mural in a relaxation zone harmonizes with precise 3D decors in the reception area, and functional printed acoustic panels complement the branding in conference rooms.

The key to their success is not owning all the machines, but the knowledge of how to use various tools to tell a brand’s story and realize the client’s business goals.

On the other hand, a good example of business scaling and deep understanding of needs is a story from our industry. Szymon from Future Wall Podhale won a strong client – an investor from the tourism industry who manages a network of rental apartments and was looking for an alternative to omnipresent wallpapers and photo-wallpapers.

The client knew that wallpapers look good at the very beginning, but after some time they peel off, and visible seams destroy the effect. He was looking for a more durable method because he wanted to avoid constant renovation costs in heavily used facilities.

That’s when Szymon proposed UV printing. Although the investor initially hesitated, he changed his mind when he saw the full picture: no joints, zero risk of peeling, a 10-year warranty, minimal substrate requirements. As the UV printing company owner reports, his contractor understood that he wasn’t looking for the cheapest solution – he was looking for certainty.

The result? After the first apartment came five more. Not because Szymon was the cheapest, but because he solved a real problem.

And let this thought stay with you for longer.

FAQ

Choosing a new technology raises specific business questions. We have gathered the most important ones to help you make an informed and profitable decision.

Which technology is objectively the most profitable?

True profitability is measured by the combination of margin potential and scalability. Two technologies stand out in this category: wall UV printing and printed acoustic panels. The key difference lies in their application.

Panels are a specialized solution, answering a specific functional problem – noise. UV printing, on the other hand, is a universal technology, offering the widest spectrum of decorative and branding applications, which gives more flexibility in reaching different market segments.

I’m starting out and have a limited budget. Where should I begin?

It is safest to start with a model based on outsourcing, for example, offering wallpaper installation. This allows you to build a client base without financial risk. However, this should be treated as a transitional stage, and the earned funds should be reinvested in technology such as UV printing, which allows for building a lasting advantage and higher margins.

What is the practical difference between a mural and UV printing from the end client’s perspective?

It is a fundamental difference. A client choosing a mural buys unique handicraft, an artist’s story, and uniqueness, accepting a longer lead time. A client opting for UV printing invests in technological precision: photographic quality, a guarantee of durability, and speed of execution with perfect reproduction of the design.

Is operating a wall UV printer complicated? Do I need a specialist?

Operating the printer requires short, professional training, but it is a process incomparably faster to master than years of painting practice. Understanding software and calibration is key. Every wall printer partner undergoes comprehensive training that fully prepares the operator for independent work.

What is the future of wall decoration in commercial spaces?

The future is hyper-personalization, durability, and functionality. The B2B market expects unique designs on difficult surfaces, executed quickly and with a quality guarantee. Technologies such as UV printing perfectly respond to these trends, while traditional wall decoration methods encounter their natural limitations here.
